Vāstu in Saṃskṛta means a dwelling house, an area of land where dwelling house is built. Vastu is a Vedic science of architecture and is also is an integral part of Vedic astrology. Vedic architecture gives dimensions, formulas, and orientations to the buildings that will provide cosmic harmony and support to the individual for his peace, prosperity, and good health — daily life in accord with Natural Law, daily life in the evolutionary direction.

Vastu Shāstra takes into consideration the energy radiating from four directions i. e. North, East, South, West and recommends selection of proper site, design and construction principles, and material.
